It's not ALLLLL About the Scoreboard
If it is, it could really be messing with your game.
We all want to win. To be the best.
It’s one of the things that inspired you to be an athlete in the first place.
It’s important to have goals tied to outcomes like the score, the clock, the podium. They are motivators.
You probably know by now that if you only focus on those outcome-based goals, you’re not always going to have a great time. In fact, they can beat you up real nice if it’s the only thing on your mind and you come up short. And we all come up short sometimes. It’s going to happen. It’s part of being a competitor.
That’s why it’s also super important to have goals related to the process of getting there.
Because that’s where the learning happens. That’s where you’re going to gain the skills to propel you toward those desired outcomes.
Here are some real-life examples:
Improving the relationship you have with your coach so you get better instruction and more time.
Learning how to let go of annoying things that happen while you’re competing.
Lessening negative thoughts that are blocking you from being your best self.
Think of one process goal you can work on this week. It can be gimungous (cultivating a better relationship with the teammate that gets under your skin) or it can be tiny (like making sure your bag is packed before you go to bed this week so you’re not such a grump when you head out to practice - oh wait, maybe that’s just my house).
It could be something that lessens stress or increases happiness, or maybe it’s just the next tiny step you can take toward reaching your goals for the season.
I’m a big fan of breaking down those big goals into tiny, achievable things you can do every single day. In the end, they really add up.
