Are You in a Healthy Ecosystem?
Here's what that means.
You can probably tell when you’re in a toxic environment, right? And, if you’re lucky, you know what it’s like when everything with your performance, your game, your team is working like a well-oiled, perfectly tuned machine. It’s magic.
Or is it?
I like to think of it as building a healthy ecosystem.
ec·o·sys·tem
1. a biological community of interacting organisms and their physical environment.
"the marine ecosystem of the northern Gulf had suffered irreparable damage"
2. (in general use) a complex network or interconnected system.
"Silicon Valley's entrepreneurial ecosystem"
Maybe you’ve built one of these in science class. If one part of the system is off, it can bring the entire ecosystem down with it.
That’s why one of our principles at Performance Reimagined is: Sometimes roles, always goals.
Roles are important. They help define expectations. You know what your role is on the field, pitch, court, etc. You know what your coach’s role is and the roles of others on your team.
But sometimes this funny thing happens where everyone’s so involved in their role, that they forget the overall goal. They make it about themselves, without consideration for others. That puts things out of balance and, if it goes on too long … BOOM 💥💥💥 disaster.
The same is true just within yourself. If you spend all your time on sports without any balance of just doing other things that humans do - you’re more susceptible to injury (mental and physical) and you can burn out.
So know your role but always keep your eye on the BIG goals. A healthy ecosystem empowers everyone in it to optimize their performance. That enables the entire ecosystem to thrive.
Glad to Be In Your Ecosystem!
BTW: The hard part of this is realizing that sometimes in your ecosystem, you may be on the bench. That sucks AND you can learn from that experience if you choose to. More on that soon…
