Find Your True Grit

(No, not the movie if you know it even is one).

Hey there!

Being an athlete takes toughness. It takes grit. But maybe not in the way you’re thinking.

As I moved up in my athletic career, life and coaching I realized that real grit is more than physical toughness and mental resilience.

It’s really about relentlessly seeking harmony.

If sport is the ONLY thing that matters in your life, you’re out of harmony.

And you’re never going to perform at your full potential when you’re out of harmony.

I’ve come up with a ritual that helps me stay balanced so, of course, I want to share it with you. I run through this list daily when I’m really knocking it out of the park. Less when I’m not. It’s funny how those two things correlate. Sure enough, if I’m remembering to do this or another mindfulness activity daily, I’m doing better daily.

I use the acronym GRIT.

G = Gratitude. Think of 1 you’re grateful for. Can be as simple a new pair of socks or as big as…well, anything (making the team, reaching a PR, a loved one recovering from a health issue). It can also be something not so positive - a tough conversation, a person with whom you find it hard to connect. While neither are fun, you’re definitely learning something if you’re looking hard enough.

R = Release. What can you release today? Think about letting go of something that no longer serves you whether it be a thought pattern or an item that’s weighing you down. Or release something about the future. Maybe it’s an upcoming competition or assignment. Let go of the pressure you’re putting on yourself to knock it out of the park.

I = Intention. Set your intention for the day. Just one or two words.

T = Thought. What thought can you carry with you throughout your day that supports your intention?

Find a note book or create a folder in your phone or tablet and try it out.

Let me know what comes up for you. It’s one more tool for your toolbox to help you find YOUR formula for success.

You’ve got this!
